The First Battalion took its turn in the ‘G’ Trenches , opposite Spanbroek Moelen, from the middle of December 1914 to the beginning of February 1915.
By the middle of January the numbers had dwindled to such an extent through killed, wounded and through sickness that it became difficult to hold the line.
All the men in the transport lines volunteered to come forward to the trenches and a large draft of some 300 arrived from Great Britain. Some officers managed to take leave at this stage.
